When do the 13 weeks begin?

I withdrew my first $5,000 in EAPs. Does the 13-week period begin as of the withdrawal date or when classes start at my child’s Cegep?

OUR ANSWER

Under the Income Tax Act (Canada), beneficiaries can withdraw a maximum of $5,000 in educational assistance payments (EAPs). To receive additional sums, students must complete 13 consecutive weeks of post-secondary education.

So to withdraw more from your RESP, your beneficiary must complete the required 13 weeks in his or her program. The start date of the 13 weeks usually corresponds to the beginning of the program’s semester.
